The acknowledgement of Matariki in New Zealand is three years young and many do not know the meaning behind the holiday.

Matariki is the Māori name for the star cluster, the Pleiades. Its annual rising in the mid-winter sky signals the beginning of the Māori New Year.

For Māori communities, this period is steeped in custom, blending remembrance with celebration.

Matariki invites people to slow down, reconnect with whānau, share kai, and reflect on the year that's been.

It's a time to honour those who've passed and set intentions for the year ahead.

Is Matariki an official public holiday?

Matariki became a public holiday in New Zealand in 2022, marking a historic moment of recognition for te ao Māori (the Māori worldview).

It is the first public holiday grounded in mātauranga Māori (Māori knowledge systems), celebrated annually between late June and early July.

In 2025, Matariki will be observed on Friday, 20 June.

    How is Matariki celebrated?

Matariki is celebrated via a range of events and activities across New Zealand.

    You might find:

    • Stargazing events and astronomy-focused storytelling
    • Whānau gatherings and shared feasts
    • Kapa haka, waiata and cultural performances
    • Remembrance ceremonies honouring ancestors
    • Art, light, and food festivals in city centres

Many people choose to reflect on the past year and set new intentions—personally, professionally, or spiritually.

When is the best time to view the Matariki stars?

The Matariki cluster is best viewed just before dawn, low in the northeastern sky.

The ideal time to see it is around 5:00–6:30 am during the weeks surrounding the official holiday when the stars rise before the sun and the sky is still dark and clear.

Dark, rural areas or local astronomy events often provide the best viewing conditions.
