    About the West Coast

Stretching from Karamea to Haast, the West Coast is New Zealand's wildest region. Located between the Southern Alps and the Tasman Sea, the landscape is threaded with native rainforest, glacier-fed rivers and pounamu-rich valleys.

The region's remote location makes it a unique event destination unlike anywhere else in New Zealand. From greenstone carving to whitebaiting, the West Coast plays a big part in defining what Aotearoa is all about.

Including Westport, Greymouth, Hokitika, and the glacier towns of Franz Josef and Fox Glacier, West Coast venues are all about the landscape.

What kind of events best suit the West Coast?

The West Coast's appeal is its remoteness and landscape. If you want to take your guests out of the hustle of a city and into another world, you’ve found the place.

Nowhere else in New Zealand can boast glaciers, rainforest and coastline within the same afternoon. Guests can walk Hokitika Gorge in the morning and watch the sun drop into the Tasman by evening.

It also photographs like nowhere else - braided rivers, driftwood-strewn beaches, moss-heavy bush and alpine backdrops give elopements and group retreats a real sense of destination.

The most popular events on the West Coast:
    - Elopements and intimate weddings
    - Family reunions and milestone celebrations
    - Wellness retreats and creative getaways
    - Small group getaways

What are the travel options to and from the West Coast?

The West Coast rewards a bit of travel effort, and most people find that's part of the experience rather than a barrier to it.

    • From Christchurch: Hokitika and Greymouth are roughly 3 to 3.5 hours by road via Arthur's Pass, one of the most scenic drives in the South Island. Air New Zealand also runs daily direct flights from Christchurch to Hokitika, taking around 45 minutes.
    • By train: The TranzAlpine is a genuinely worthwhile way to arrive — a scenic rail journey from Christchurch through Arthur's Pass National Park to Greymouth, with Hokitika a short transfer beyond.
    • From Queenstown: The glacier towns of Franz Josef and Fox Glacier sit within a few hours' drive south, making a Queenstown–West Coast combination a popular route for guests extending their stay.

Factor into your plans: West Coast weather can change quickly, and some routes (particularly Arthur's Pass in winter) can close. Building in a buffer of time on either side of an event is a smart, well-worn piece of local advice.

    Featured West Coast Venues

    Sailor's Catch

Further along the same Hokitika coast, Sailor's Catch pairs design-led interiors with hotel-grade comfort and beachfront views. It opens up or scales down as needed - providing an accessible base for families, small groups or a team retreat. Located minutes from town, Sailor's Catch hosts up to 15 guests and sleeps 9.

    The Black Barn

Thirty minutes north of Hokitika, the Black Barn sits high on the hillside, extending an invitation to slow down and soak in the beauty of New Zealand's West Coast.  Curated interiors, a brasserie-style barbecue and an outdoor fire make it a soulful escape built for three couples—intimate getaways and retreats for up to six.

    Enchanted

Where the coast gives way to native bush, Enchanted offers a sanctuary of ferns, birdsong and glow-worm dells. The glass atrium is flooded with light, while ziplines, tree huts and a starlit spa scatter the property. Hosting up to 20 guests or 12 overnight, Enchanted is perfect for elopements, retreats and celebrations.

    Drifting Sands Beachfront Retreat

Aptly named, Drifting Sands is a luxury beachfront retreat right on the Hokitika beachfront and just minutes from the township. Sink into the six-person ozone spa at sunset, then stargaze from the firepit. This boutique property sleeps 10 guests and is ideal for family gatherings, milestone celebrations and intimate retreats.

Summer (December to March) offers the most reliable weather and the longest daylight hours, making it the most popular window for weddings and outdoor gatherings. Shoulder season (October–November and April) can still deliver excellent conditions with fewer crowds, though it pays to have a wet-weather plan regardless of the month.

Yes, in most cases. Public transport between towns is limited, and many venues sit outside town centres in bush or beachfront settings. A rental car (or a private transfer arranged in advance) is the most practical way to move between accommodation, venues and activities.

Coverage can be patchy once you're off the main highways, particularly around more remote bush or hillside properties. It's worth confirming signal strength directly with the venue if guests need to stay contactable, and planning for limited connectivity as part of the appeal rather than a drawback.
