Wonderful gem in Ponsonby, quieter amongst the hustle and bustle. Rene made us immediately feel welcome and Francis made the best negroni my partner has ever had. The croquettes and cheese balls deserve a special shout-out considering they disappeared so quickly. We've been before and we will most certainly return to this hidden garden.

We popped into this place with some friends on a Friday night after a dinner in Ponsonby, and - let me tell you - this place became the highlight of the evening!!The owner Rene was an absolute super star 😁✨! You could tell that this is not his job, but rather his passion.He didn't just make some phenomenal cocktails for us. No, no, no. He CRAFTED them!Rene asked us not to look at the cocktails menu but rather tell him what flavors each and one of us prefers, and then - he walked away to the bar where all the magic happened.Result?The four very different and very, very delicious and beautifully presented cocktails - each and one of them 'marrying' really nicely to what our four souls desired that night.Thank you Rene and the team at Cafe 39. You rock!We will be back, no doubt.

This place is such a vibe... Three separate areas, speakeasy style bar inside, street seating out front and cool courtyard area out the back. A range of arty events for entertainment - poetry nights, music, stand up. Accommodating host with the most-est, Rene and amazing staff. Plus the chips are so tasty!!
