Hayes Common is a friendly neighbourhood eatery in Hayes Paddock, the heart of Hamilton East. Set within a restored heritage building beside the Waikato River, the venue pairs riverside views with an award-winning interior.

Originally built in the early 1940s as part of New Zealand’s first state housing suburb, the building once housed the local shops of Hayes Paddock. Thoughtfully renovated, it now stands as Hayes Common — a community space named after the neighbourhood it calls home.

The venue is wheelchair accessible and thoughtfully laid out across two connected indoor rooms, linked by a central doorway. Indoors, it can comfortably seat up to 70 guests, while a combination of seated and standing arrangements allows for gatherings of up to 100.

A north-facing outdoor area provides an inviting space for late afternoon or early evening events, making the most of natural light and relaxed river-side ambience. Fully licensed, Hayes Common also serves barista-made local coffee, offering flexibility for both daytime and evening functions.

A variety of menus cater to canapé-style events and seated banquets, showcasing seasonal dishes inspired by Mediterranean and Middle Eastern flavours. Ingredients are ethically sourced, with much of the produce grown in the on-site kitchen garden, and many elements made in-house.

What an amazing experience… apart from the food itself (which is AMAZING) the staff are so friendly. They make you feel at home. I wish I could go every day! We had my mum and dads 40th wedding anniversary breakfast there❤️ they made it so special.

Had an amazing dinner. Kid friendly. Staff were really good, excellent food and service and lovely setting too. We have been a few times over the years. Whether it’s for a family brunch, a dinner or a collab tasting with Hamilton Beer and Wine. They usually have a few beers on tap which is excellent and a selection of good cocktails too. Over the different levels recently they have also done some good platters for picnics and their donut day is a delicious time too.

What a great discovery this cafe was. After roaming Hamilton Gardens for a couple of hours, we went to Hayes Common which is only 5 mins away. The food was delicious: fresh, healthy and well presented; the iced lattes were excellent and the doughnuts filled with lemon curd were sublime. As it was near closing time, the lovely staff member gave us three doughnuts for the price of two - thanks for that and it was much appreciated.I would highly recommend this place to others.
